093 Finding a Martial Arts Dojo for the Beginner

Today, Jack and I talk about some things to consider when choosing a martial arts gym for the novice interested in training:

  • The vehicle analogy.
  • Self Defense and Combat. Same?
  • What makes an art Combat based?
  • How to research?
  • The sexy and deadly training triangle.
  • A loose list of some interesting arts.
  • Some funny stories,
  • And more!

Below: Filipino Kali (The type, or sub group that I train currently, is “Pekiti Tirsia”)

Below: Brazilian JiuJitsu. Imho NOT combat, but VERY essential none the less. VERY essential.

Below: Wing Chun Kung Fu, (Sometimes Gung Fu), great close hand to hand training, speed, accuracy, timing.

Below: Thai Boxing, or “Muay Thai”. Very very strong kicks, punches, elbows, knees, and cardio. Very strong indeed.

Below, because I am passionate about it: some more Pekiti Tirsia Kali. Lots of mobility and footwork, principle based, combat based.

Below: Same art, Pekiti Tirsia Kali, but from a different instructor. You can see a big difference in the presentation.
