Handcuff Escape – Shim

A “shim” technique is when you slide an object between two integral parts of a lock, in effect opening the lock. How could this help you pop your ass out of handcuffs? Hold my beer and watch this!

This technique will NOT work when the cuffs are double locked, for LEO and Military, you’d be surprised that most agencies do NOT teach the limitations of their gear especially against the restraints that officers carry. AND I have personally seen experienced officers fail to double lock handcuffs, multiple times. So learning the limitation of your gear, I found, helps my students have a REASON to remember to double lock handcuffs and to properly apply them.

Hair Beret – VERY easy to miss on a search. (especially in a female’s hair, easily overlooked)

And don’t ever fucking forget:

RULE – ALL restraints are temporary!!!

Training:

  1. Put one cuff on your left hand, key way on the inside of your wrist, key way facing up towards your elbows. Escape.
  2. Put one cuff on your left hand, key way on the inside of your wrist, key way facing down towards your fingers. Escape.
  3. Put one cuff on your left hand, key way on the outside of your wrist, key way facing up towards your elbows. Escape.
  4. Put one cuff on your left hand, key way on the outside of your wrist, key way facing down towards your fingers. Escape.j

-See the pattern here? Repeat right hand. Repeat with both hands cuffed, using both hands respectively to pick (shim) the cuff. Then do ALL of it, behind your back.

Bonus:

When I drive people to the jail in my cruiser, if I suspect they are manipulating their hands or getting fidgity I have them rotate their bodies and show me their hands in my rear view mirror. FYI I have had several women slip their hands right out of handcuffs, …not at work though 😉
